The Modern Guide to Men’s Jewelry

Have you ever considered wearing men’s jewelry, but weren’t sure where to start? With the popularity of social media and online shopping, it seems everyone’s style is on display more so than ever before. This means seriously upping your fashion game, whether you’re a man or a woman. Men’s jewelry is seeing a resurgence in street style. In fact, according to The New York Times, global sales of men’s luxury fine jewelry reached $5.3 billion in 2017, up from $4.3 billion in 2012 (an increase of 22%). It’s a way to add some flair to the everyday or revamp your style completely. With Father’s Day just around the corner, now is your opportunity to start your man’s jewelry collection and level up your style. Guys… it’s time to accessorize. Adding jewelry to your everyday style can seem intimidating if you’ve never rocked bling before. That’s why Dallas Gold & Silver Exchange has created the Modern Man’s Jewelry Guide to help you incorporate jewelry into your personal style — and look good doing it! Whether you’re 18 or 90, we want to make it as easy and enjoyable to add jewelry to your everyday look. Watches A good watch is the perfect first stop on your journey to your newly curated style. Now, you may be asking: “why would I wear an analog watch when I have a smartphone?” Did you know that wearing a wrist watch has been proven to make you appear more competent and trustworthy? Or that just wearing a wrist watch can improve your chances of getting hired or promoted? So, the real question is: “why wouldn’t you wear a wrist watch?” Your watch acts as an anchor for your style and sets the tone for the rest of your look. From our experience, you can never go wrong with a pre-owned Rolex. It’s easier on the budget and you can wear it for years to come. However, that’s certainly not your only option. Take the time to check out some wrist watches and decide which one conveys your personality best. Cufflinks You’ve picked out the perfect watch, but still want to experiment with some bling. If you want to invest in something to express your style discreetly, fashionable cufflinks are the way to go. They are still basic necessities, and you can go as muted or as flashy as your style permits. While not necessary, it looks sleek if you match metals with your watch and your cufflinks. Want to get fancy with some designer cuffs? We’ve got you covered there! Or, are you looking for something simple and sleek? We’ve got options for you, too. Rings Long gone are the days where men only wear wedding rings – fashion rings are back in full force to add some manly panache to your everyday. Start out with just one ring if you already wear a wedding ring. If you’re a bachelor, go for one on each hand. Rings, like watches, add some interest to your everyday look straight away — especially since your hands are one of the first things new acquaintances will see. Necklaces This one might be a new one for you, but trust us; even just a simple chain can pull together your look like nothing else. To start, we recommend a necklace length of about 56-60 cm so it hits directly on your sternum. Whether you want to rock an edgy pendant or a sleek chain, we suggest matching your metals to the rest of your bling. Now that you’ve read our guide, take this Father’s Day as an opportunity to cultivate your style and go shopping at Dallas Gold & Silver Exchange — treat yourself!

May Birthstone Spotlight: Emerald

May is upon us, and those of you with birthdays this month have a stunning birthstone: the brilliant emerald. This gemstone’s rich green shade symbolizes the renewal and rejuvenation of spring. In fact, the name “emerald” comes from the Greek word “smaragdus,” which literally means “green.” Interested in learning more about emeralds? Keep reading for a rundown on why this gemstone is so special. In honor of the May birthstone, here are some fun facts about emeralds: High-quality emeralds can actually be worth more than diamonds on a per-carat basis. One of the most expensive, the Rockefeller Emerald, is worth just over a whopping $5.5 million! Emeralds are made up of a type of mineral called beryl, the same mineral that makes aquamarine. Gem experts differ on exactly what shade constitutes an emerald or a less-expensive green beryl. GIA uses lab-graded comparison stones to determine if the green color is dark enough and saturated enough to be called emerald. Cleopatra famously had a passion for these brilliant green stones. Funny enough, Elizabeth Taylor, the actress who notably played the Egyptian queen, had an affinity for emeralds, as well. Her on-again, off-again husband, Richard Burton, gifted her a beautiful necklace beset with emeralds and diamonds from Bulgari. Emerald measures between 7.5 – 8 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness. Though they are durable stones, emeralds are susceptible to chipping and cracking. Rather than using harsh cleaners on emerald jewelry, use mild soap and water to ensure the gemstone’s quality. Dallas Gold & Silver Exchange carries much more than diamonds, silver and gold. We carry a wide range of jewelry featuring gemstones, especially emeralds! If you’d like to see more of our selection, come in and see us weekdays 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. or Saturdays 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. If you enjoyed this post, keep an eye out for future monthly gem spotlights.

Engagement Ring Etiquette: When “I Do” Becomes “I Don’t”

An engagement ring: a symbol of hope for the future and longevity in a loving, trusting relationship. Engagement ring etiquette dictates we wear it on our left ring fingers because that’s where a vein connects to your heart. This, however, is an old wives’ tale. While it’s a romantic thought, it’s a modern myth… similar to the idea that every engagement turns into forever. While it’s certainly not your intention when you purchase or accept an engagement ring, we know that plans and relationships fall through. After a particularly painful end, it may be tempting to put that ring to the side and let it gather dust. However, let us be the first to encourage you to dust off that ring and give it a new life. Whether you want to sell it for cash or get rid of its bad juju, we can help you create something wonderful with it. After all, as C.S. Lewis said, “there are far, far better things ahead than any we leave behind.” Can’t decide what to do with that old engagement ring? Let us make some suggestions: Check the Laws in Your State Concerning Who Gets the Engagement Ring. If your engagement or marriage was recently called off, look into the local laws concerning who gets to keep the engagement ring. According to Worthy, broken engagement rules vary from one state to the next in the United States. For example, Texas is an implied conditional gift state when it comes to engagement rings. This means that the ring belongs to the bride if an engagement is broken by the groom. While he can request the ring back, it is considered the bride’s legal property unless she is the one who ended the engagement. For more information, visit Nolo. Sell Your Ring So, you’ve gone through the research or spoke with your ex and the ring is yours. Maybe you no longer want it or maybe the only thing that will heal your emotional wounds is cash. This opens up a world of opportunities! If you sell it to us, we’ll give you cash on the spot for it. Whether you want that cash for a vacation or for your rainy day fund, you’re free to choose how that ring contributes to your future. Trade in Your Ring If you’ll miss the feeling of a ring on your finger, trade it in for something you’ll love. Trading in your ring at Dallas Gold & Silver Exchange means you could end up with a pre-owned Rolex watch, a ring with a different gemstone, David Yurman bracelets, or even a new diamond ring. We’ll make sure you’ll leave with something that makes you as happy as that old engagement ring did. Repurpose Your Diamond Perhaps the diamond in your ring is a family heirloom or you have a sentimental attachment to it. By re-setting or re-purposing your diamond, you can keep the sentimental aspect and cleanse it of any bad memories. Whether you want to set it in a new ring or as a necklace, our full-service repair shop can create your perfect piece. At Dallas Gold & Silver Exchange, we can help you make the best of any situation where “I do” becomes “I don’t.” If you find yourself in this predicament, bring in your ring and we’ll help you decide what’s best for you!

Official Diamond Shape Guide

So, you’ve decided to start looking for a diamond engagement ring. Good news — you’re in excellent hands! We’ll help you find your dream engagement ring at Dallas Gold & Silver Exchange for the very best price. The first step in creating the perfect engagement ring is choosing the right diamond, starting with its shape. Choosing the diamond shape for your engagement ring is deeply personal, so take your time in making the right decision. To help you along your path to the perfect engagement ring, check out the Diamond Shape Guide from the experts at Dallas Gold & Silver Exchange: Diamond Shape 101 Even if you’re just beginning your journey to your dream diamond, chances are the first thing that comes to mind is its shape. A diamonds shape (not to be confused with cut), refers to the general silhouette of the stone, according to the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). Each diamond shape has their own defining attributes that match different styles and personalities. Round Round diamonds reign supreme as the most popular engagement ring choice. They are a classic option that look gorgeous in a wide variety of settings. It makes them the perfect diamonds to pass down as a family heirloom because they stand the test of time and trends. This shape is well-suited for the woman with traditional style and who keeps their accessories simple and timeless. Princess As the second most popular diamond shape behind round, this diamond fits a wide variety of styles from contemporary to traditional. Like the round diamond, it fits perfectly many different settings. If you are on the hunt for a diamond that is easy on the budget, the princess cut is a great option since the process of cutting is simpler and keeps more of the rough diamond — and, of course, it shines just as brightly as other shapes! Emerald Emerald cut diamonds are a fabulous way to make a statement. They stand out among other cuts due to their mirror-like step facets and their elongated, rectangular shape. Emerald diamonds make wonderful solitaire options, three stone settings or settings with small accent diamonds. This diamond suits a wearer with sophisticated style and can also give an elongated effect to ring fingers. Asscher This royal shape is unique in that it is the first diamond shape to be patented — and it’s no surprise why The Asscher Diamond Company would want this cut all to themselves! This diamond shape is cut with step facets, similar to the emerald cut diamond. The “hall of mirrors” effect with the Asscher cut exudes old Hollywood glamour and royalty, so this is the perfect shape for the bride-to-be that dreams big and has a flair for vintage items Marquise This regal cut is making a comeback — and for good reason! The marquise diamond boasts a brilliant 58 facets and its slim figure can appear larger than its carat weight. Some are even opting to set it horizontally for a modern take on an antique-style shape. Setting it vertically can have a slimming effect, as well. This style is perfect for the recipient with a flair for vintage and elegant style. Oval This stone in particular is having a moment. Oval diamonds are a modern twist on the classic round diamond. Similar to the round diamond, they fit wonderfully in a variety of settings. The elongated shape of oval stones can also make a ring finger appear longer and leaner. This shape is a beautiful option for the bride-to-be with chic and modern style. Pear This unique style resembles a teardrop and, according to the GIA, “blends the best of the round and marquise diamond shapes.” A versatile shape, some romantics like to wear their pear-shaped diamond with the point facing their heart, while others find a slimming effect with the point facing the tip of their fingers. We find this cut gorgeous with a curved band shaped to hug the diamond — it makes a fabulous compliment to a stunning shape. Heart If your bride-to-be is a romantic with an affinity for pink, look no further than the heart-shaped diamond. Living up to its name, the heart diamond embodies the symbol of love and affection and therefore makes a gorgeous engagement or anniversary ring, or even as a special gift for Valentine’s Day. This diamond is cut similarly to the pear shape and features two rounded edges divided by one cleft. Here’s a little-known fact about heart shape diamonds: it is one of the most difficult cuts to create, making it all the more special!

Are You Tidying Up Marie Kondo Style?

Marie Kondo Folding Clothes

Over the past few years, the Marie Kondo method of tidying up has exploded in popularity across America. The Japanese tidying guru, as a result of her wildly popular book and Netflix series, has a method that is convincing (typically materialistic) Americans to get rid of dust-gathering junk like never before. If you’re unfamiliar with the Marie Kondo method of tidying up, here’s a simplified explanation: the first steps involve going through your home, category by category, and placing all of your belongings in the center of the space. You then pick up each item, consider it and ask yourself, “does this item spark joy?” If the answer is yes, you keep the item since it makes you happy. If the answer is no, the item is either discarded, donated or sold. Simple as that! Of course, Marie Kondo has methods for keeping your space tidy by folding and organizing, but the real magic happens when you face the challenge of getting rid of the clutter that doesn’t spark joy. There’s a reason the Marie Kondo method is so popular — it feels great to purge old junk cluttering up your home! At Dallas Gold & Silver Exchange, we want to help you tidy up AND make some cash at the same time by buying any gold, silver, fine jewelry or bullion that may be sitting stagnant in your home! How do I tidy up with Dallas Gold & Silver Exchange? Marie Kondo recommends going through your clutter by category, beginning with clothing and ending with mementos. Depending on if you have nostalgia associated with your items made of fine metals, you can organize them in either category. The Tiffany Yellow Diamond: The True Star of the 2019 Academy Awards

Lady Gaga in Black Dress

The 2019 Academy Awards hosted hundreds of movie stars, famous directors, producers, and creators. Unsurprisingly, Lady Gaga was one of the most anticipated stars to walk the red carpet — but not for a meat dress or sky-high heels. While she typically rocks daring looks, Lady Gaga was the epitome old Hollywood glamour in an Alexander McQueen gown, matching leather opera gloves, and the famous Tiffany Yellow Diamond around her neck. What’s So Special About The Tiffany Yellow Diamond? The Tiffany Yellow Diamond is one of the largest Fancy Yellow diamonds in the world. It has only been worn a handful of times. Not only is this the first time this diamond has seen the flash of paparazzi cameras at an award show, it is the first time it has been worn by a starlet since 1961. Last worn by Audrey Hepburn in promotional photos for Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Tiffany’s released this diamond from their vault specifically for Lady Gaga. She introduced this diamond to the glitz and glamour of modern Hollywood along with Tiffany & Co. white and yellow diamond earrings as accessories. The stone weighs over 128 carats and was discovered by Charles Lewis Tiffany, founder of Tiffany & Co., 141 years ago in South Africa. “The rarity, beauty and sheer magnetism of the Tiffany Diamond are unprecedented,” said Tiffany & Co. chief gemologist Melvyn Kirtley. The legendary diamond is a brilliant cushion cut with a unique 82 facets — it is said to be priceless. What Does Dallas Gold & Silver Have to Offer? While we don’t quite have a diamond of this size at Dallas Gold & Silver Exchange, we have plenty of diamonds that probably fit within your budget! Come in and see our collection of GIA-certified diamonds for sale whether you are looking to make a splash or for the perfect stone for an engagement ring. We have everything from cushion cuts like the famous Tiffany diamond mentioned, to pear and heart-shaped diamonds.

Put A Ring On It – And Leave It There

Couple Holding Hands

Buying engagement and wedding rings at Dallas Gold & Silver Exchange was always a great idea and a great deal. Now it’s even better. That’s because – and maybe it’s not the ideal subject for this joyous occasion, but hey, stuff happens – odds are better than ever that you’re putting on those rings for good. Phillip Cohen, professor of sociology and the University of Maryland, has crunched U.S. Census Bureau numbers and concluded that millennials are leading the way in the decline of divorce rates in America. “We see people getting married at older ages, people getting married with college degrees already,” Cohen said. “They are less likely to be already divorced or have children when they get married, both of which are risk factors for divorce.” Overall, divorce rates dropped 18 percent from 2008 to 2016, even though surveys have tracked an increase in divorce among older Americans in recent decades – with far less social stigma than there used to be. But millennials are setting a new standard for not rushing into marriage, then sticking with it once they’ve tied the knot. “The change among young people is particularly striking,” Susan Brown, a sociology professor at Bowling Green State University, said of Cohen’s results. “The characteristics of young married couples today signal a sustained decline [in divorce rates] in the coming years.” So we’ll be even more conscientious about helping your pick the right rings. Because chances are better than ever you’re going to love them forever.
